(Editor’s note: Since the beginning of football season is just around the corner and the beginning of a new sports year for all we’re concerned (baseball doesn’t count), 6magazineonline.com will present weekly sports updates for our Ozonemag.com readers. Hit the jump for their first entry).
Is it not obvious the connection between football and hip hop? Youth is served in America on a few distinct platforms being sports, fashion, and music, regardless of race, creed or color. I just bought a Raiders fitted last week not because I give a damn about Al Davis, but because I still love the way NWA rocked the Raiders hats back in the gap (day). That being said, lets take a look at the basics principles that are common ground in football and hip hop.
There are always winners and losers. Jay-Z, Alabama, Nas and the New Orleans Saints are your winners. Your losers being the aforementioned Oakland Raiders and hip hop artists like Mims. More examples of the losers list include Flo-rida and Vanderbilt, D-12 and Illinois. Battles are intense and get everyone’s attention. Auburn vs Alabama is just as important as Jay Z vs Nas. Moreover, this new Rick Ross and Young Jeezy beef resembles the Dallas Cowboys versus the Washington Redskins. The key is there is always beef whether it is lightweight or heavyweight in football and in hip-hop it’s bound to happen any time.
Regarding both, you might go to jail Plaxico Burress and Lil Boosie, Mike Vick and Lil Wayne, Tyler Patrick Thomas (Oregon State Streaker) and T.I. the lists goes on and on. You have your one hit wonders like David Tyree and Cali Swag District as both made waves in the last few years but will never be heard from again. You get hot enough you get a shoe deal: 50 Cent, Mike Vick, Adrian Peterson, Jay-Z, Deion Sanders, Larry Fitzgerald hell even Master P had some shoes around in his time. Both Football and hip-hop have elder statesmen. Football has Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders, hip-hop has Rev Run and Jay-Z. These are minute connections, but the gridiron and hip-hip are forever intertwined at the end of the day. Every football player is going to take his jersey off and put on some Air force Ones and pop in a Trae, J-Cole, Freddie Gibbs, Fabolous or T.I. and vibe on the way home because that’s what you do. As most rappers are watching the big game reminiscing about their hay day on the gridiron swearing up and down they could have hit the league if the dope game, a pregnancy, lame coach, etc. hadn’t derailed them.
Lastly, both football and hip-hop appeal to the 14-34 year old male demographic. Men in this age range are down for Wale and the Redskins, Nipsey Hussle and the Chargers, or the Atlanta Falcons and Pill. It always will be this way. If all of this still does not make any sense, ask yourself why I bought two of those Raider fitted hats one more time, why everyone and their mama was rocking a Starter jacket in the early 90s, or why rappers like Wale and Lil Wayne are on ESPN’s 1st Take. Sports and hip-hop go hand in hand together. Football and Hip-hop have the same DNA of confidence, presence, passion, and skill.
