2009 BET Awards Recap (by: Eleven8)

No Gravatar

This year’s award show was especially important due to the passing of music’s biggest star, Michael Jackson. BET was set to do a tribute to Michael during the awards show. Little did I know what I was getting myself into.

I tuned into the pre-show kind of late. I was just in time to see Jeremih’s backup dancers flash their birth canals at me and witness Pleasure P nearly have an asthma attack 30 seconds into his set. I wonder if Pleasure P thinks we forgot that he used to Grind with Pretty Ricky…oh no buddy, we ain’t forget. SMH. Pleasure P repeatedly referred to himself as “The New Bad Boy of R&B.” Between KC, Bobby Brown, and Chris Brown, Pleasure has a long way to go before he can claim that title.

You probably also caught Michael’s father, Joe Jackson, grieving on the red carpet (by grieving I mean plugging his new record label).

But lets get to the highlights from the actual show:

Jamie Foxx was the host. He was incredibly funny. He talked about his memories of Michael Jackson, and even did the moon walk across the stage. Highlight: Jamie almost landing face first, not to mention his extra smedium pants.

a_jamiefox

- New Edition paid Michael Jackson tribute by performing their rendition of a few Jackson 5 hits. They struggled to hit notes, but on the upside Bobby Brown looked healthy.

- Soulja Boy hit the stage to perform “Turn My Swag On.” He must of paid BET because he just got the HDTV treatment…wow!

a_beyonce

- Beyonce performed “Ave Maria” and “In The Arms Of An Angel” wearing a Victoria’s Secret girdle and someone’s science project.

- BET scoured every unemployment office in America to dig up Kieth Sweat, BBD, and Guy for a New Jack Swing Medley. Did they sound good? I plead the fifth!

- Ciara, Monica and Keyshia Cole performed. All pretty decent performances. Monica killed it!

- So far I hadn’t seen much of an MJ tribute. I would have loved to see some dancing, someone page Sexy Spec!

- Jay Z performed “D.O.A” …they love it so I’ll reserve comment for later. I will say this though, Hov only cut his hair because it’s hot outside and he sweats in his head..dont get it twisted.

_Jayz

- BET dug up Tevin Campbell and he still sounds good. No sign of Usher or Chris Brown yet.

- Don Cornelius took the stage to present an award to the OJays…45 minutes later, Don was STILL on stage.

- The OJay’s pretty much bum rushed the stage..If they wouldn’t have done so Don would have been there all night.

- Eddie Levert reflects on meeting Michael Jackson. He goes on to talk about the “Black or White” video and how everyone was “dancing and sh*t” << His words not mine. Apparently BET wasn't quick enough to catch it. The crowd went WILD. From now on "Dancing and Shit" will be the phrase that pays.

- Alicia Keys and Wyclef were recognized for being wonderful humanitarians. Great and all, but where's Chris Brown?

- Drake and Lil Wayne performed "Every Girl." BET was having a hard time *bleeping* out all the curse words. They eventually gave up. I smell a fine from the FCC in their near future. Speaking of "every girl", who let these kids on stage?

Drake

- Janet spoke on behalf of the Jackson family in regards to the tragic loss of their son, brother, and friend, Michael. Not a dry eye in the house. It was a very emotional moment.

Janet

- Jamie and Neyo closed the show with “I’ll Be There.” Although the rest of the show was a hot steaming mess in my opinion, this was a great way to end it all. RIP Michael. You are dearly missed.
