Ozonemag.com Interview: Little Brother

LB2-2

On April 20th, Little Brother released Leftback, an album said to the North Carolina duo’s last. But why? You’d think after three previous critically acclaimed albums this group would be the furthest thing away from a swan song. On the flipside, the music business can wear down even the most talented artists, so LB’s sudden curtain call isn’t that illogical.

Still, questions remained unanswered. What’s next for Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte? What’s the real beef with their former producer and group member 9th Wonder? And once again, why, why, why is Leftback the final Little Brother album? Ozonemag.com attempted to get the answers to all these questions and more, as we chopped it up with Pooh and Tay, separately, since that’s how it’ll be from here on out.

pooh

Rapper Big Pooh

Why is Leftback the final Little Brother album?

It’s the last record, man. It just got to a point where as a group, me and Tay, we felt we got to a point where we took it where we could take it. [We’re] just creatively moving in different directions, man. And business wise we’re moving in different directions. What made Little Brother special is being on somewhat of the same page whenever we went in to record. And once you start to lose that, you don’t wanna…we didn’t wanna end up sacrificing our personal relationships to continue a business relationship. So, we saw where it was heading, we were grown men about it, we had a conversation or two, and decided that it was best if we went on and [said] this is it.

So, there’s been a strain in your personal relationship?

Nah, there ain’t been a strain. But you know how you can see things before it happens? Like I don’t know if we’re gon be butting heads on this, are we gon be butting heads on this. It’s almost like you can start to see things before they happen, and you try to resolve them ahead of time.

What direction would you say that you’re headed in musically?

I’m still rappin’, bruh. I can’t sing or nothing, so all I can do is rap. But sonically, I’m moving more towards my stuff being more West Coast inspired. So, that’s what I’m leaning towards whenever I go to pick a beat, or when I do something. Whereas Tay, he’s basically leaning more towards singing right now. That’s where his heart is. So, you can’t make no Little Brother record where I want it to sound like this, and he wants it to sound like this, and they’re nowhere near each other. They’re worlds apart, so just little things like that.

So, what is the sound of Leftback?

It’s a collection of songs, man. A lot of people are like, “aw, man, they didn’t do it like they used to do it.” It’s like; it wasn’t intended to be like how we used to do it. It’s a collection of songs, it’s more free flowing, it’s really no rhyme or reason to it. It’s just, we’re making jams, cause originally it wasn’t supposed to be an album. It was supposed to be an EP with leftover songs, remixes and a couple new songs. But once we decided that this was gon be the last thing we put out, we went back in and made more songs for it. So, it’s more of a free flowing type of project.

So, 9th Wonder is not involved with the album at all. What’s the whole issue with 9th Wonder and Little Brother?

The whole thing with 9th, what we try to explain to people, this isn’t a music problem. This isn’t a problem where we have a problem with him musically. This is a personal problem. We all came up together. We got our start in this business together. So, our problem runs deeper than the regular music problem, where if you don’t know somebody, you just work with them from time to time. It runs deeper than that. It’s a whole lot of personal things there that we have yet to straighten out. And when you have somebody that refuses to actually have a man to man and talk to you, but we know you’re talking to everybody else, other than who you need to be talking to about the problem, then we take issue with that. Other than that it’s like, go head live your life, we gon go live our lives, and that is what it is.

LittleBrother

It’s seems like out of the three, you’re the quiet one about that situation. Phonte has done video blogs, 9th has been in the media and Twitter, but you’ve remained quieter about it. Why is that?

There’s no need for me to make a video when somebody else already did it. It’s pointless. A lot of people think because of the timing, that we did it for more publicity for the album. But it ain’t even like that. That’s why there wasn’t no need for me to say anything. I didn’t need to make a video, I didn’t need to go and do 300 interviews talking about the situation. That was unnecessary. [9th Wonder] knows what it is. He knows the issues. Everybody don’t need to know the issues, but he knows what they are. We need to have a real conversation. So, there’s no need to make a video about it, he knows what it is.

Taking into consideration all the ups and downs Little Brother has had. Are you satisfied with the Little Brother legacy?

I’m definitely happy with it, man. You always wish you could have done more, and that’s just the nature of really wanting it. But I’m not upset with the legacy we left. There are a lot of cats coming up now, that I proudly say, grew up on Little Brother music. And now they’re doing music, so that’s something that I’m very proud of. So, I’m definitely happy with the legacy we’re leaving.

What’s next for you as a solo artist?

I’m working on a few things, man. I’m working on a collaborative project with my homeboy Roxy, out of the West Coast. We’re going to put something out at the middle of the summer, and then it’s back to concentrating fully on my next solo release, Dirty Pretty Things. I’m really excited about the material I got for that so far, and I just can’t wait of the world to hear it.

Can you see a Little Brother reunion in the future?

I don’t know, man. I can’t predict the future. If I could I’d be a very, very rich man. I know me and Tay are going to continue to work together in some capacity, it’s just not going to be in a full-time basis like Little Brother.

Do you have any last things that you want to say to Little Brother fans?

I just want to thank the people for listening, and thank the people for all the support they’ve given us through all the years, man. We really appreciate all the love we’ve been getting.

phonte1

Phonte

Why is Leftback the last Little Brother album?

We pretty much said everything we wanted to say in that arena. And so, I’m just a fan of not outstaying my welcome, I guess. If that’s the best way to describe it, you know. My best work comes when I’m inspired. And once you don’t really have the inspiration to do something anymore, or once it’s not really in your heart, that doesn’t really make for good music, in my opinion.

Personally, you’re one of my favorite MCs, so for you to say Hip Hop doesn’t inspire you, can you explain why you’re not inspired anymore?

In a lot of ways it doesn’t. It’s still something I still listen to in time. But it’s more of a thing where it’s not longer the necessity that it used to be. Like when I was younger, I just needed Hip Hop. Now it’s just more of a thing to where it’s almost like I can kinda take it or leave it. If I come across some dope Hip Hop, then that’s great. If I don’t it doesn’t really affect me as much as it would ten years ago, when I was like, “God, where is all this wack shit coming from?” [Laughs]. Now I’m at a point where I can just ignore that shit I don’t wanna hear, and support the stuff that I do like.

But you’re still going to make music with Foreign Exchange and Nicolay. So, that arena still inspires you to be creative and make music. So, is that the direction you’re moving towards?

Yeah, more so just songwriting, producing, singing, and creating stuff for other artists. That’s pretty much where I’m at with it now. I still do rhyme, I still got Hip Hop stuff coming out. I’m gonna do a solo record next year that’ll be mostly emceeing. But just in terms of Little Brother, I just didn’t think it would be fair to the fans, and mainly to Pooh, as a friend, to try to keep forcing something that wasn’t there creatively.

Little Brother had many ups and downs, so how do you see the Little Brother legacy?

I just see it as pretty much just three cats that made the music we wanted to make, and made the game on our own terms, and we left on our own terms. And it’s not really something that a lot of artists get to say. Most artists come in the game and kinda get hoed out until the game is done with them. So, that fact that we were able to come in making the music that we wanted to make and go out making the music we wanted to make, and we kinda set our own schedule, so to speak, I think that says a lot. So, if anything, I’d just wanna be remembered on those terms. We did it our own way.

So, what’s the real issue with 9th Wonder?

Well, I pretty much spoke on that in the video, and I’m not gon really speak on it no more. So, anybody that’s got any questions about that, they can go check the video that’s up on Vimeo.

And that’s pretty much it, man.  But I will say that our problems have nothing to do with Hip Hop. It ain’t got nothing to do with rap music, or Little Brother, or none of that. It is a problem between two men. It ain’t between Phontigallo and 9th Wonder. This is between Phonte Coleman and Patrick Douthit. This ain’t got nothing to do with me wanting to get Little Brother back together, or get more 9th beats. I’m done with that musically. That was more so done to try in some way to mend a former friendship. I said what I wanted to say about it, I’ve made my peace with it either way.

Cool. Let’s talk about the Leftback. What do you want to say about the last Little Brother album?

I hope people enjoy it. It wasn’t an album that was meant to be a perfect ending; it was just an ending. This wasn’t something that we planned, like we didn’t sit and plan this to be the last record, that’s just the way the cards fell. It wasn’t something that was meant to be this big grand send off. This is the last music that we’ve done. And we just wanted to give it to the fans, just so I could walk away saying I left it all on the field. If you played sports, that’s basically saying at the end of the game you gave it your all. No matter if you win or lose, or whatever. You can walk away from the game knowing that you left it all on the field. So, no matter what happens you can be at peace with what you did, knowing you did all you could. There are no Little Brother “vaults,” no unreleased songs, not secret albums, none of that. When I say we gave the fans everything we had, we literally gave them everything that we had.

As far as moving on from Little Brother, you are already Grammy nominated as a member of Foreign Exchange, what other solo aspirations do you have left?

I don’t know really. I’ve just been real busy working just on the songwriting and production side. Working with my girl Yahzarah on her album, The Ballad of Purple Saint James, and that’ll be out May 4th. And my man Zo!, his record, just been really working and co-producing with him on that. And then we got the new Foreign Exchange album coming in October. And in terms of solo, next year I will do a record. From that point we’ll just see where it goes. I truly don’t have much interest in a “solo” career. I really just want to do a record to get it out of my system. Cause that’s the one thing I have yet to do, just a Phonte solo record. And after that, we’ll just see what happens.

Do you have any last words you want to say to the fans about the last Little Brother album?

I just want to say thank you so much to every one of the supporters. It really means a lot. I just can’t say it enough. We just really appreciate it.

Leftback is available in stores and iTunes now.
